Leadership in action.
Community Psychology Research Group
During my time as a researh assistant for Dr. Hershberg, I have learned how to be a leader. Within the team, I have taken the role of the organizer and manager. During this time I have not only learned about my own leadership style, but I also improved my planning and management skills. I have learned that I am a mix of two different leadership styles, laissez-faire and a servant leader. When working in a group setting I provide the other group members freedom and autonomy to do their part in the project, but I always provide support and resources when needed. I prefer to lead by example with high integrity, rather than tell others what to do. My main goal when working with a group is to meet the needs of others. I have learned about my strengths and weaknesses and I shared my techniques with my team to improve how we run our research. Additionally, given the topics we are researching, I have noticed the social injustices and inequalities in our society and I aim to take action against those inequalities. I have volunteered with schools and organizations to aim to foster equity in the school system. Volunteering in the classroom Over a two month span I volunteered in a 3rd grade classroom where I helped students with math, science, and history. During this time I learned how to understand the children's individual needs and how to help them through their problems. I became passionate about helping students and it drove me to further understanding the school system and what career I would like to have within the school system. I not only found out my own passion but I helped students become passionate in their work as well. |
