By attending multiple different workshops around campus it has aided in the development of my values and attitudes and how they are linked to leadership. To the left the five workshops that I attended are listed accompanied by each workshop is a quote from the presenter that helped form my views and attitudes. My top values include knowing your community and yourself, being passionate, and having a purpose.
Knowing Your Community and Yourself: I believe that this value is the most important for a leader to have. In every workshop it was heavily emphasized that having a true understanding for the community and their needs is important for helping a community. If an individual does not understand the community they wish to work with then they cannot properly lead that community. Moreover, it is extremely important for a leader to know themselves as well; if an individual doesn't know who they are, their needs, or where their passions lie, then how are they expected to understand the needs of others. For me personally, I have began working on truly understanding who I am and what I want to achieve in life. After I truly understand who I am, then I will be able to know what community I would like to serve and work with. Being Passionate: Another value that I believe is crucial to being a leader is to be passionate. Truly passionate leaders are important because they spread that passion to others which can inspire others. It is also important because the impact that passion has on others is that it drives and motivates individuals to strive for success. I have always been passionate about helping those in need and my goal is to take that passion and apply it in my work. Because I have always had a passion I went into the field of psychology and I hope to find a job where I can implement my passion to work with youth who have cognitive and behavioral disorders. Having a Purpose: In order for someone to be a leader they must have a purpose. What I mean by this is that a leader must have a clear vision of the future and each action has meaning. A good leader must be able to communicate that vision with clarity and passion in order to motivate and inspire others to take action. When working with various different communities I always think about what my purpose is for the day and what the overall purpose for me working with this community is. This requires critical thinking, organization, and vision. |
